DIAGRAM: The quarterback is in the shotgun. He takes the snap and pump-fakes the Z screen. The running back circles around the QB so as the pump-fake comes down, it lands in the RB’s pocket. If the play is a regular counter, then the RB tries to go around the end. If you want a counter pass, the X receiver runs a hitch-and-go. Now the RB reads the cornerback. If the CB covers X, then the RB keeps the ball and runs. If the CB comes up for the tackle, the RB passes to X.
