DIAGRAM: The tailback receives the quick pitch and gets depth. He then reads the alley support player (the outside linebacker or the safety). If the defense is in zone, which means the alley support player attacks the quick pitch, then the TB passes the ball to the flat (Z, the slot receiver, runs a 5- to 7-yard out cut). The X receiver runs a fly route to clear the zone. If the defense is in man, the TB keeps the ball. In this case the slot receiver (Z) runs a fly along with the X. This play forces defenses to bring their free safety into the box to account for the TB, which then frees up play action off the quick pitch. The offensive line blocks play action (blue) rules. The FB protects the play-side run-through by the inside LB.
