DIAGRAM: Rip Split, 66 Flat. This play is designed to go to the flat. The Y runs a ricochet route (4-cut). Y is looking to post up the No. 3 defender or whoever would have the fullback (F) in man coverage. Y shows his number to the quarterback at the top of the route to avoid being called for a pick. F runs to the flat and he is the QB’s first read. If F is open, a good throw gets an easy 5 yards. The second read is to Z, who runs a 10- to 12-yard route (6 cut). The third read is to the Y who finds an open area.
This play is best run against man coverage. All receivers are coached to separate against the man coverage.
