OUR OFF-TACKLE Power Play serves as eight plays in one. The backfield action and linemen rules apply for the five running plays and the play-action pass rules apply for the three pass plays. The base play is called “46/47 Power.”

We’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of this series. It’s easy for players to grasp, so it really cuts down on your teaching time.

There’s also a lot variation in the Off-Tackle Power Play and it can be run out of multiple formations, (strong or weak) forcing the defense to remain honest to its responsibilities.

“46 Power”

DIAGRAM 1: “46 Power.” The player assignments for this series are as follows:

QB: Opens to 5 o’clock, gets depth on 3 steps, hands off to the TB and follows through with sprint-out action.
Tailback: Takes a flat step followed by a crossover step and gets square to the LOS on the third step. Receives the handoff and attacks the C-gap.
Fullback: Uses a kick-out block on the defensive end in the box or a log-roll on a crashing DE.
Flanker: Uses a stalk block on the cornerback or attacks either the strong safety or outside linebacker.
Left Offensive Tackle: Cuts off the defensive tackle.
Left Offensive Guard: Pulls to the C-gap, attacks the LB or SS.
Center: Blocks the nose guard to the nearest LB.
Right OG: Double-teams the NG with the center and then attacks the backside LB.
Right OT: Double-teams the defensive tackle with the tight end.
Tight End: Double-teams the DT with the right OT and then attacks the play-side LB.

DIAGRAM 2: 46/47 QB Keep. Off the same action, you can run the “46/47 QB Keep” if the SS cheats to help stop the TB run.

DIAGRAM 3: 46/47 Reverse. If the FL is a gifted athlete and you want to make an effort to get him the ball, you can run the “46/47 Reverse.”

DIAGRAM 4: 46/47 Ghost. With the reverse action, you can also run the “46/47 Ghost,” which is the Power run with a fake.

The “46/47 Ghost Keep” works great on the goal line. You fake the Power run and then have the QB run the keep around the end.

Play-Action Series

DIAGRAM 6: 88/89 Play-Action Series. In the play-action series, the backfield action remains the same. We call “Roger Door” on 88 for a pass to the right and “Lucy Door” on 89 for a pass to the left. The line protection is to step to the play side and then hinge block. The FB and TB pick up the DE.
