ALL FOOTBALL SYSTEMS eventually develop a base play to go to anytime, anywhere and with any type of personnel. At our school, the Delaware Wing-T Belly has become our base or “bread and butter” play.
This play fits a big pounding type of fullback or it can be just as effective with a small “slashing” FB.
Attack Points, Reads
The 3 back in our system needs to run with his eyes constantly reading the defense because our blocking system offers a three-way go every time the play is run. The back can take it to the called point of attack — read and cut back over the center; or go to the back-side offensive tackle.
As with any system, have line calls with backfield checks that allow an adjustment at the line of scrimmage.
Blocking For The Belly
Line blocking is predicated on angles from OT to OT which gives your line a distinct advantage over bigger defensive personnel.
The following diagrams indicate how important the 2 back is in the scheme. He must be an outstanding blocker who is not afraid to take on anybody (linebacker, defensive tackle or defensive end) depending on the adjustments you make each game.

Player Responsibilities
Outside End: Stalk block the corner. From a tight formation, outside release to corner.
Left OT: Man block vs. 50 (head inside) if man slants in, or is inside the gap, drive him down hard. Against a 40/60 set use cross-blocking technique.
Left OG: Drop step, trap first man to the outside (left shoulder - left, right shoulder - right). Vs. 40/60 tackle goes first.
Center: Take on the nose guard vs. 50. Take in the direction of the slant. Vs. a 40/60, take on the first defender away on the LOS.
Right OG: Vs. 50, fold with the OT, OG goes first. Fold with center vs. 40/60. Release step to the play side, release to the LB, center first.
Right OT: Vs. 50; fold with OG, OG first, release step or skate step to play side, release to LB. Vs. a 40/60, skate step to play side and help with man over OG (seal). Cheat split in vs. 40/60.
Tight End: Cut off/inside. “Slam” release to the safety.
2-Back: Lead block in 4 or 5 hole to the play side. Look for LB. 2-back must pancake the LB or first man in hole.
3-Back: Long sweep step to play side, 2nd step crossover to LOS. Square shoulders to the LOS and use read blocking.
4-Back: Go in fast motion on the count, block first man off the LOS to the play side.
Quarterback: Reverse pivot beyond 90. Use a crossover step, ridestep or fake-keep pass.
