The following scheme was taken from Brian Kelly, the head coach at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich. They have found this play to be extremely successful throughout the years against a variety of coverages. We have translated it to the high school level with much success. We like the simplicity of the progression and continuity vs. different coverage schemes.
DIAGRAM 1: Trips Right 9799 (4 Vertical Vs. Middle Of The Field Open). The QB reads the weak safety in the MOFO (Middle of the Field Open) coverage and throws away from his movement. This gives the QB 2-on-1 versus the safety in his deep half. (If he runs with the post, he’ll work toward the right, inside out. If he over-rotates to the right, he’ll work toward the left, inside out.)
Receivers must know how to attack this coverage and work toward open areas

DIAGRAM 2: Trips Right 5795 (4 Vertical Vs. Middle Of The Field Closed). The QB reads the free safety in the MOFC coverage and throws away from his movement. This gives the QB 2-on-1 vs. the CB in his deep third. (If he runs with the post, he’ll work toward the right, inside out. If he drops or rotates to the strength, he’ll work toward the left, inside out.)

Receivers must know how to attack this coverage and work toward open areas. The back can block to the strong side or release on a hot or swing route.
