This is a good play-action pass that’s set up by an effective stretch play and can be run out of a variety of formations. It’s a great play to use if you have talented TEs. While the offensive line stretch blocks to the left, the QB opens up, extends the ball out, fakes the stretch play and boots back to the 9-hole. This is a naked boot, so the slower the better and the QB must get proper depth to avoid the backside DE’s rush. The TB must sell the fake and the TE must “slam” down inside and get a piece of a defender. The TE holds the block for a 2-count and then releases into the flat at about 4-5 yards (the TE is the No. 1 read). Z runs inside as if he’s cutting off the safety, then explodes to the corner at 10-yards, trying to get behind the CB. X runs a backside post route at 12 yards, reading the FS and trying to sneak in behind him. F runs a 10-yard drag route, always staying behind the “slam” route and making sure not to overlap (F is the No. 2 read).
