DIAGRAM:

This may be the best play that we run. The QB needs to execute a fast, full pivot and must locate the DE. The DE is the key read player for the QB. The option will be run to the end man on the LOS. The QB’s handoff key is the defender responsible for the FB. The QB meshes with the FB and rides him into the line.
The FB executes a crossover step, then a lateral step. At this point, he must square his shoulders to the hole, make a good pocket for the ball, keep his eyes upfield (do not look for the ball) and run hard north-south after the handoff. The TB opens and runs an option path to the sideline.
If the QB is unable to read this play, you can call a “give” and make a predetermined give to the FB. You can also call “option” and use a predetermined pitch to the TB. Or you can call “follow” in which the QB follows the FB up into the hole after the mesh ride.
You can cross-block this play up front or use base or down blocking. Another option is to make a “G” call and have the guard pull to kick out the end and follow either the QB or give to the FB.
