ALL COACHES TRY to attach “catch phrases” to help players remember the fundamentals. At Tomales High School, we tell our defensive linemen to use the Five S’s for pass rushing.
The Five S’s stand for stance, step, strike, separation and sacking the quarterback.
Players can easily remember the Five S’s and coaches can break down and evaluate pass-rushing techniques in each of the five components.
1. Stance. A three- or four-point stance is acceptable. The defender should have his body in an “attack mode” with a forward lean ready to explode on the snap of the ball. A narrow stance is most advantageous to exploit speed.
2. Step. The first step is a critical component for success to any pass rusher. A rapid push-off will allow the defensive lineman to get to his target area quickly. The step should be forward, explosive and forceful.
3. Strike. Defensive lineman must strike the offensive lineman and push him backward to establish control at the line of scrimmage.
4. Separation. Use of the hands is the most vital component for any good pass rusher. The defensive lineman must maintain control of the offensive lineman while having some space (separation) to perform his pass-rushing technique.
5. Sack. The use of proper pass-rushing technique will give a pass rusher the ability to finish the job. Defensive lineman must quickly apply the appropriate pass-rushing technique, find the closest path to the QB and then tackle him to finish off the play.
By implementing the Five S’s, the young defensive linemen can quickly and easily evaluate their own plays and correct any prior mistakes.
