Welcome to the latest edition of Gridiron Strategies. We are back for a full complement of six issues in 2010. More than anything else, we want to hear from you – what you like, what you don’t like, and what you’d like to see more of. We also welcome your drills reports and clinic articles as well as any thoughts you may have on football off the field – articles on motivation, conditioning, improving team chemistry, and player evaluation. Gridiron Strategies is a publication for football coaches, written by football coaches. We want to hear from you.

This issue includes both offensive and defensive drills along with articles on defensive end reads, the Wing-T, and the Triple Option Kickoff Return. Additionally, an excerpt is included from the book ‘Art of the Upset’ by former high school head coach Bruce Reynolds. The subject is ‘Scouting and Preparation: Out-thinking Your Opponents.’ In this excerpt Coach Reynolds discusses the importance of attention to detail, knowing the opposing team’s personnel strengths and weaknesses and how it relates to your offensive and defensive play calling, and what the responsibilities should be for position coaches.

In future issues of GS, we will include more off-the-field subjects. In our next issue, Coach Gary Lewis of Belvidere North High School (IL) discusses six critical elements of what he terms, ‘The Hidden Foundational Secrets For a Successful Football Program.’ Also included in the upcoming issue is an article on ‘Attacking the Trap’ and ‘Run Blocking For the Gun-Triple Option.’ Every issue will include lots of X’s and O’s.
