Starting with this issue of GS, the first of six in 2012, detailed articles on position-specific fundamentals and techniques will be included. In this issue, Cedric Shell, the Wide Receivers Coach and Passing Game Coordinator at McPherson College, breaks down the following categories for wide receivers –
• What is expected of each wide receiver
• Principles of wide receiver play
• Principles of the start, stance, alignment, release and break
• Blocking mechanics
• Specific areas of pass coverage
• Catching the football
• Reading the coverage
• Coverage identification
In essence, Coach Shell has written a primer 101 for wide receivers. He expects every wide receiver to show leadership, have the right attitude, possess a willingness to learn, have self-control and always be confident. In our next issue of GS, Coach Shell includes ten different wide receiver drills that can be applied at every level.
Additionally, this issue includes an article on how to improve the speed of your offensive linemen. Ken Taylor, the Speed Doctor, will be a regular contributor to GS on position-specific speed training for each position. Four different drills are included to make your O-linemen faster. According to Taylor, for O-linemen to get faster, their thoughts should be on: what to move, where to move it, and when to move it there.
Also included are clinic articles on ‘Advanced Defensive Circuit Drills,’ ‘Using Number Keys to Teach Pass Coverage,’ and the ‘Importance of the Punt Return Team.’ According to Jermod Mapp, the Special Teams Coordinator for Shaw University, the punt return is the offense’s first play.
As always, we welcome your suggestions and comments.
We hope you enjoy this issue of GS.
Respectfully,
