DIAGRAM 1:We like to have our receivers run twist patterns and this action usually allows for easy dump passes to our tailback. It's a great way to get our tailback to the outside, usually one-on-one with a linebacker.PLAYER ASSIGNMENTS: Offensive Line:Zone pass protection. Quarterback:Take a 5-step drop, looking right to the receiver side. On the fifth step, plant and pivot to read the backside. If the LB is jumping, swing it to the 3-back who will take it upfield to the vacated area. If the LB isn't jumping, deliver the ball on time to the 3-back to the outside. 2-Back:Pass protect (Check from the LB to the end). 3-Back:Take two steps, read for the blitz from the LB to the end, then release on a swing route (continuing to read the LB). If the LB reads the pass, take the pattern upfield. Receiver X:Run inside release after pushing 3-steps upfield. Run at the free safety to occupy him. Receiver Y:Run seam route inside toward the cornerback to occupy him. Receiver Z:Run 1-step north-south, then release to the outside and occupy the cornerback. —Craig Durant, Saratoga Springs High School, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. |
